Brockton police had a suspect in custody Wednesday after a woman was stabbed in the throat during a home invasion, leaving her in critical condition.

Police told WCVB-TV the arrest took place in Raynham, but did not release any details.

The 62-year-old victim called 911 from her home on Brookfield Drive around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Brockton Police Sgt. Jim Baroud told the Brockton Enterprise.

Police and EMS were forced to break down the door to reach the victim, who suffered life-threatening injuries. She was in critical but stable condition at Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital.

The victim told police that a man, described as an African-American male, 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing more than 200 pounds, forced his way into the house and demanded jewelry before attacking her.

Investigators believe the woman knew her attacker, who police called armed and dangerous. Officers were also looking for a gold Mercury Mountaineer SUV with Massachusetts license plate 656JH1.

Neighbors say the victim has lived in the neighborhood for 30 years, and is a widow with two grown sons.

Anyone with information about the attack was urged to call Brockton Police at 508-941-0200.
