Tech-savvy straphangers can now vote on the best of more than 50 mobile applications aimed at improving commutes in the city's public transit system.
The 57 apps, available on the mobile web, iPhone or Android devices, were developed through a competition by AT&T and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
The apps use real-time MTA data to alert riders of service changes or disruptions, as well as other useful information.
One app, MetroNap, detects when the subway is moving and sets off an alarm when sleepy commuters reach their destination.
SubCulture.FM helps MTA customers find their favorite subway musicians.
Another app, TRANSient, adjusts the traditional subway map by factoring in delays and late-night service changes.
"New Yorkers are always on the go and these apps will help connect riders to the information they need to improve their commutes," AT&T New York State President Marissa Shorenstein said in a statement.
MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast said he was pleased at the number of developers dedicating time to help subway, train and bus riders.
"Now the public gets to decide which ones they think are the best," Prendergast said in a statement.
The best designs will receive $50,000 total in prize money to support the development of the apps that best aid MTA riders. The winning apps will be promoted by the MTA and AT&T in late September.
Online voting on the apps runs through Sept. 10.
