Windy, wet weather causes road mayhem

State roads were backed up yesterday morning as the brunt of a major storm hit the area just as commuters hit the streets. There were multiple reports of accidents, downed wires and closed roads.

“It did coincide exactly with the morning rush,” said state police spokesman David Procopio.

Troopers responded to “numerous spin-outs and crashes caused by snow and ice,” Procopio said. A pair of trucks crashed in Ludlow and a slew of accidents were reported in the Merrimack Valley.

There were no reports of fatalities or serious injuries.

The state’s Highway Department began preparing for the storm Tuesday afternoon and as of noon had nearly 2,600 pieces of snow and ice equipment on state roads, bridges and highways, according to Massachusetts Department of Transportation spokesman Colin Durrant.
