A Brooklyn woman who said she witnessed the death of 16-year-old Kimani Gray from her apartment window claims that the teen did not have a gun in his hands, according to The Daily News.
Gray was shot and killed by police this past weekend after he pointed a gun at two officers. A loaded weapon was recovered at the scene.
Tishana King said she looked out her third-floor apartment window on Saturday night when she heard loud talking and laughing. She then saw a burgundy sedan pull up and two police officers get out of the car. One of the officers then pulled out a gun and shot an unarmed Gray, King said.
“I’m certain he didn’t have anything in his hands,” King told The News. Detectives interviewed King for eight minutes after the shooting. When asked to describe what she saw in detail, the witness never mentioned seeing Gray with a gun, according to The News.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said that another witness said he heard one of the cops shout, “What do you have in your hands?” Police have also said that the officers, whose names have not been released, first reported that the teen had pulled a gun.
Gray’s death has left the neighborhood in East Flabush in unrest. A vigil held for the teen on Monday night turned into a riot, with a large group ransacking a local drug store.
