A female taxi driver was killed in a fiery crash on the Zakim Bridge early Monday morning that left black scorch marks on the structure and shut down several lanes of the major highway for hours.

Debra Sarno, 54, of Chelsea, was driving a cab for Malden Taxi and was killed in the crash, state police said. The cab, for a reason that is under investigation, was stopped in the right lane of I-93 north on the bridge when it was hit from behind by the tractor-trailer just before 6 a.m.

The produce truck driver, a 47-year-old Connecticut man, suffered minor injuries.

Police worked to collect footage from public safety cameras in the area and conducted interviews as part of their effort to determine the cause of the crash, the district attorney’s office said.

The crash closed the northbound lanes of I-93 and some southbound lanes, severely stalling traffic on both sides of the bridge for hours while crews worked to clean up after the crash and police conducted their investigation.

Anyone with information on the crash can call police at 617-727-8817.
