Woman raped in Upper East Side apartment

A 27-year-old woman was raped in her ground-floor apartment on East 90th Street early Saturday morning, according to reports.

The rapist is believed to have broken in through her window, said police, and neighbors in the building heard screaming just after 5 a.m. Saturday. The woman fled into the hallway of her building, where her super found her, and her unarmed attacker ran out the front door.

The attack comes only days after a man was arrested for stalking and groping women on the Upper East Side as they walked to and from the subway.

Citywide, rape is up 10 percent this year in New York, with 788 rapes occurring through August of 2010, compared to 872 this year.

And the Upper East Side is seeing an even greater rise in sexual attacks compared to last year: In the 19th precinct, which spans the UES north of 67th Street, there were 6 rapes last year, and 9 so far this year, a fifty percent increase. Farther north, in the 23rd precinct, which is east of 102nd Street, 12 rapes occurred last year and 18 so far this year, again a 50 percent increase.
