On Tuesday, officials stated that a schizophrenic man sliced another passenger’s face on a 3 train as it rode through Brooklyn.

Stephen Brathwaite, 37, of Brooklyn, faces assault charges related to the Monday altercation in which he allegedly used a folding knife to cut a victim’s face, the New York Daily News reported. Brathwaite was apprehended at the Crown Heights/Utica Ave. station, and his knife was also recovered by authorities.

Before boarding the 3 train at the Pennsylvania Avenue/Livonia Avenue station, Brathwaite reportedly paced back and forth, staring at the victim, before throwing coffee on him, the Daily News stated. Once aboard the subway, Brathwaite assaulted the victim with the folding knife, cutting the right side of his face.

At least six knife attacks have occurred on the New York subway so far this year, the Daily News reported, adding that NYPD Commissioner William Bratton said the slashings are a high priority for police.

“Certainly assaults – particularly the slashings – the stabbings will always be a high priority,” Bratton was quoted by the Daily News.
