NYC Administration for Children’s Services is spending $16,250 to replace 250 mattresses at the city’s two secure detention centers for juveniles.

ACS Commissioner Gladys Carrión, speaking at a juvenile justice oversight hearing on Tuesday, said she decided the mattresses needed to be replaced after trying one out at Horizon Juvenile Center in the Mott Haven area of the Bronx.

“I lay down on this mattress and it was very uncomfortable,” Carrión said. “If my children can’t sleep on that mattress, no one else’s child should sleep on that type of mattress, so we are getting new mattresses for every child.”

Carrión said the thin foam mattress with a plastic cover was folded over to make room searches easier for center staff. Mattresses are being replaced at Horizons and at Crossroads Juvenile Center in Brownsville.
