Cops charged with assaulting Crown Heights teen

Two NYPD officers have been charged with assaulting a 16-year-old boy during a Crown Heights arrest in August.

Street surveillance captured the incident, during which the officers are seen striking the teen, allegedly with a gun and their fists.

Police Officers David Afanador, 33, and Tyrane Issac, 36, have both been suspended for 30 days without pay, and will return to the department on modified duty.

Afanador, who is charged with second-degree assault, a felony, criminal possession of a weapon and official misconduct, faces up to seven years in prison if convicted. Issac is charged with misdemeanor assault and official misconduct, and faces up to a year in prison if convicted.

An investigation found the officers were on patrol in an unmarked car around 2:20 a.m. on Aug. 29, when they saw Kahreem Tribble throw a bag of marijuana and run.

Issac chased Tribble, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office, and when Tribble stopped and put his hands up, the video shows Issac striking him in the head. Afanador then apparently hitTribble in the mouth with his gun, breaking his teeth, and Issac is seen punching the teen on the ground.

NYPD Internal Affairs investigated the incident, according to the D.A.’s office.

Both officers were arraigned Wednesday, and released on bail. They are due back in Brooklyn Supreme Court on Dec. 8.

A grand jury indicted the officers earlier in the week. Brooklyn D.A. Ken Thompson said the officers not only violated the minor’s rights “after he raised his hands apparently to surrender,” “but also trampled on their sworn oath to serve, protect and uphold the law.”
