Cops rescue apparent suicidal man from Hudson River

Two officers were altered to a man in the water off of South Cove Park and found a 49-year-old struggling in the water.

A man who jumped into the water near Battery Park City early Tuesday morning was rescued by police after he apparently tried to take his own life, authorities said.

Two officers with the NYPD's Critical Response Command were alerted at about 1:20 a.m. that there was a man in the water near 50 Battery Pl.

Officers Rajub Bhowmik and Ismael Mercedes both responded to the South Cove Park, where they found a 49-year-old man struggling in the water.

Officer Bhowmik entered the waterand secured the man, while Officer Mercedes requested the NYPD's Harbor Unit.

When two divers from the Harbor Unit arrived, they entered the water and removed the man at the North Cove Marina.

EMS took the man to Bellevue Hospital for treatment and evaluation. Officer Bhowmik wastransported to New York University Downtown Hospital for evaluation as well.

Police said they believe the man had jumped into the water in a suicide attempt.
