First Disability Pride Parade celebrated Sunday

New York celebrated the city’s first Disability Pride Parade Sunday afternoon. Speakers included Mayor Bill de Blasio, Victor Calise, Commissioner from the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and city councilmembers. The pre-parade show and rally gathered at Madison Square Park, then proceeded south on Broadway to Union Square. Curb cuts and ramps made the parade possible, along with help from the NYPD and volunteers. This month is Disability Awareness Month in honor of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, protecting the disabled from discrimination in hiring, public housing and transit, communications and government activities. This year is the 25th anniversary of the ADA.
