It won’t be easy for Todd Bowles to replace Rex Ryan as the New York Jets’ head coach. But in the eyes of one of his former players, Bowles has some amazing qualities that could translate well to this particular locker room.

One former player of the Arizona Cardinals, who played for Bowles when he was the defensive coordinator there, told Metro that Bowles is a “player’s coach. He played in [the] league, he expects players to handle themselves.” But he also cautioned that there will be accountability, something that may have been lacking at times over the last few years in New York.

In replacing Ryan, Bowles will have a difficult time. Over the past six seasons the Jets players referred to him simply as “Rex,” with no label, not title attached, simply “Rex.” He was universally loved by the players, who doused him with Gatorade in Week 17 the last two seasons despite those teams finishing out of the playoffs. Bowles will be no Ryan but he has the ability to carve his own path with this team. And this former player thinks that the locker room will take to Bowles.

Just don’t expect a carbon copy of “Rex.” With that being said, Bowles and his own affable style should resonate with the roster. But if the friendly nature of Bowles as a player’s coach sounds like he is cut from the same cloth as Ryan, then the comparisons will only get stronger.

“He runs an attacking 3-4. Loves to blitz a lot,” the player said.“Teaches every aspect of the game to be aggressive, tackle aggressively, go after ball carriers and quarterbacks aggressive. He also is very good at studying other teams and tendencies. I stood by him countless times during games and heard him call out full drives of play.”
