IK Enemkpali is really sorry. But he still likely wants his $600 back.
The former New York Jets linebacker, cut from the team on Tuesday after a locker room fight with Geno Smith that left the quarterback in need of jaw surgery, issued a statement through his agent about the incident. In the brief statement distributed by his agent, Enemkpali sort of apologized while dragging Smith into some of the fault: “I apologize to the Jets organization, coaches, teammates and fans. Geno and I let our frustration get the best of us, but I should have just walked away from the situation. I deeply regret and apologize for my actions. It was never my intention to harm anyone. I appreciate the opportunity I had with the Jets.” According to Brian Costello of the New York Post, the fight, in which Enemkpali sucker-punched Smith, was the result of $600 owed by the quarterback. In Costello’s report, Smith owed the money for failing to attend a charity event run by Enemkpali. Smith could be sidelined for up to 10 weeks according to head coach Todd Bowles.
