Inside Look: Rent this former president’s ‘Summer White House’ in the Hamptons

Today the Hamptons is known as a destination for the rich and famous, but back in the 19th century, one president spent the hottest days of the year at his “Summer White House” in Sag Harbor Village.

Chester A. Arthur, the 21st president of the United States, once had a three-story Victorian on Union Street. More than a century since his death, the home, which has been completely renovated and redesigned,is available to rent during the summer and beyond.

Arthur came to office following the assassination of President James Garfield, who initially survived the shooting, but died only about six months after his inauguration. Garfield went on to only serve one term, until 1885, after failing to get renominated. He died a year later at age 57, and had reportedly been hiding a fatal kidney disease since early on in his administration.

Though Arthur was a Vermont native, he went to school in New York state and practiced law in New York City.According to History.com, he was even sworn in as president at his brownstone at 123 Lexington Ave. in Manhattan.

If Arthur needed an escape from the city there was his “Summer White House” in the Hamptons, which he used from 1881 to 1884.According to its listing, from Douglas Elliman’s Michaela Keszler and Felicitas Kohl of Corcoran, the property is perfect for a public figure looking to get away as it’s “private and secluded,” and sits on about a third of an acre.

“This house doesn’t get better if you love traditional living with modern perfection,” Keszler said.

The six-bedroom residence still maintains historic characteristics, but has been renovated — features include a pool, audio system, terraces, media room and wine cellar.

“Outfitted with the finest Swiss linens, beautiful china and Riedel glasses,” this is the first time the former presidential abode is being offered for rent ($180,000, August through Labor Day; $480,000, year).
