Police have arrested a man who was chased by church-goers and priests after he entered their Newark church and allegedly assaulted a priest.

Police said that Shawn Swinton, 33, entered a church on Martin Luther King Boulevard on Sunday morning and assaulted a priest, ABC7 reported.

Swinton, an East Orange resident, ran away after the alleged assault, according to NBC4. As he ran, other priests and parishioners chased him.

As Swinton neared the corner of Broad and Market streets, the group alerted area police officers who were able to arrest him without incident, published reports stated.

Swinton was charged with assault and he was being held without bail on a warrant, NJ.com reported.

The priest was moved to University Hospital and was treated for minor injuries before being released, according to ABC7.
