A man has died three days after attempting to hang himself while in police custody on Staten Island.
The man, who has not yet been identified by police, was being booked on robbery charges at the 121 Precinct on Wednesday, May 27. Officers later found him unconscious with a sweatshirt around his neck, attached to his cell. He was taken to Richmond County Medical Center, and died on Saturday. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death, and the investigation is ongoing.
Police sources told the New York Post that the man allegedly choked a grocery clerk at 109 Van Pelt Ave. before trying to steal money from a cash register, and he was apprehended and held by another store employee until police arrived.
