A New York man who stole thousands of dollars from five families seeking Section 8 housing in Washington Heights and Westchester County has been sentenced up to six years in prison.
Enrique Guerrero, 26, pleaded guilty last month in State Supreme Court on charges of grand larceny and a scheme to defraud. Manhattan DA Cy Vance announced the sentence on Tuesday.
Guerrero took $16,000 from five families in October and November last year after posing as a government housing representative, according to the DA’s office and Guerrero’s plea agreement.
Guerrero collected cash payments and promised the families a lease and keys. Many of the victims did not speak English, and Guerrero had a past conviction for a housing scam, Vance’s office said.
