A man who died in an elevator accident on the Lower East Side saved a woman's life by pushing her out of the elevator car, according to a published report.

The victim wished the woman "Happy New Year" before the elevator at 131 Broome St. fell to the basement Thursday night, according to the New York Daily News.

“She started going in, but the elevator started going down, and he pushed her out,”  Manuel Coronado said as he translated the woman's account to the Daily News. “He said ‘Happy New Year’ and pushed her out.”

The man was taken to New York Downtown Hospital with severe body trauma, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The Daily News reported that the building has three active violations with the Buildings Department, all for elevator defects.

The management company told the Daily News that there would be no comment until after the holiday weekend.
