MAP: NYC street closures during Pope Francis’ visit

If you’re a New Yorker you already know about the traffic woes every year during the last week of September due to the United Nations General Assembly. This year, traffic confusion and street closures will double because Pope Francis is visting New York City.

Beginning on Friday, Sept. 24 at midnight and running through Sunday, Sept. 26,the New York Police Department will be closing a series of streets throughout the city to motor trafficmaking it extremely difficult to get around town by car.

Here is the long list of street closures starting on Sept. 24 during Pope Francis’ visit to New York City. Be sure to plan ahead.

Starting around midnight, the following streets near St. Patrick’s Cathedral will be closed to traffic until 9 p.m.:

  • 50th Street from Madison Avenue to Fifth Avenue
  • 51st Street from Madison Avenue to Fifth Avenue

At roughly 3 a.m.. the following streets will be closed to vehicular traffic until 6 a.m.:

  • Fifth Avenue from 47th Street to 55th Street
  • 48th Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 49th Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 50th Street from Fifth Avenue to Sixth Avenue, and will remain closed until 9 p.m.
  • 51st Street from Fifth Avenue to Sixth Avenue, and will remain closed until 9 p.m.
  • 52nd Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 53rd Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 54th Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 55th Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue

At 6 a.m. the following streets will be reopened until 10 a.m:

  • Fifth Avenue from 47th Street to 55th Street
  • 48th Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 49th Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 52nd Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 53rd Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 54th Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 55th Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue

Starting at roughly 10 a.m. the following streets will be closed to motor traffic until 9 p.m.:

  • 5th Avenue from 47th Street to 55th Street
  • 48th Street through 55th Street will be closed from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 49th Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 50th Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 51st Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 52nd Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 53rd Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 54th Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue
  • 55th Street from Madison Avenue to Sixth Avenue

Beginning at 2 p.m. the following streets will be closed until 9 p.m.:

  • Madison Avenue from 47th Street to 57th Street

On Thursday the FDR Drive will be subject to intermittent closures:

  • Southbound at 63rd Street
  • Northbound at South Ferry

Beginning at approximately 8 a.m. the following street close to thePapal Nuncio’s Residencewill be closed to motor traffic until Saturday, Sept. 26at approximately10 a.m.:

  • 72nd Street from Madison Ave. to 5thAvenue

Beginning at approximately 3 p.m. the following street near thePapal Nuncio’s Residencewill be closed to vehicular traffic until Saturday, Sept. 26at approximately10 a.m.:

  • 71stStreet from Madison Ave. to 5thAvenue

Please note: Trucks and other large vehicles will not be able to access:

  • Madison Ave. from 69thStreet to 74thStreet while Pope Francis is in residence

Beginning at approximately 10 p.m. the following streets in the vicinity of thePapal Nuncio’s Residencewill be closed to vehicular traffic until 6 a.m.:

  • 71stStreet from Park Ave. to 5thAvenue
  • 72nd Street from Park Ave. to 5thAvenue
  • 73rdStreet from Park Ave. to 5thAvenue
  • Madison Ave. from 70thStreet to 73rdStreet

Please note: Trucks and other large vehicles will not be able to access:

  • 5thAve. from 74thStreet to 71stStreet
  • Madison Ave. from 69thStreet to 74thStreet

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25TH

The following streets near the United Nationswill continue to be closed for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to vehicular traffic:

1st Avenue from 42nd Street to 48th Street.The tunnel underpass from 41stStreet to 48thStreet will remain open for passenger cars. Trucks and other large vehicles will not be able to access until the end of the day’s session.

  • 43rdStreet from 1st Avenue to 2nd Avenue
  • 44thStreet from 1st Avenue to 2nd Avenue
  • 45thStreet from 1st Avenue to 2nd Avenue
  • 46thStreet from 1st Avenue to 2nd Avenue

The following will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at approximately 5:00 a.m.:

  • 42nd Street from the FDR Drive to 2nd Avenue
  • 42nd Street Exit and Entrance Ramps of the FDR Drive

These areas will reopen each evening after the day’s session.

Beginning at approximately midnight the following streets in the vicinity of the9-11 Memorialwill be closed to vehicular traffic until approximately 1 p.m.:

  • Liberty Street from Trinity Place to Greenwich Street
  • Cedar Street from Trinity Place to Greenwich Street

Beginning at approximately 11 a.m. the following streets in the vicinity of the9-11 Memorialwill be closed to vehicular traffic until approximately 1 p.m.:

  • Northbound on West Street from Battery Place to Murray Street

Additional intermittent closures/managed access to vehicular traffic in the vicinity of the9-11 Memorialincludes:

  • Southbound on West Street from Chambers Street to Albany Street

Trucks and other large vehicles will not be able to access:

  • Southbound on West Street from Chambers Street to Albany Street

Beginning at approximately midnight the following streets in the vicinity of theOur Lady Queen of Angels Schoolwill be closed to vehicular traffic until approximately 6 p.m.:

  • 112thStreet from 2ndAvenue to 3rdAvenue
  • 113thStreet Cul-de-sac

Please note: Starting at approximately 3 p.m. trucks and other large vehicles will not be able to access:

  • 2ndAvenue between 106thStreet to 116thStreet
  • 3rdAvenue between 106thStreet to 116thStreet

Beginning at approximately midnight the following streets in the vicinity ofCentral Parkwill be closed to vehicular traffic until approximately 7 p.m.:

  • Central Park West between Columbus Circle and West 81stStreet
  • W 61stStreet between Central Park West and Broadway
  • W 62ndStreet between Central Park West and Broadway
  • W 63rdStreet between Central Park West and Broadway
  • W 64thStreet between Central Park West and Broadway
  • W 65thStreet between Central Park West and Broadway
  • W 66thStreet between Central Park West and Broadway
  • W 67th Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue
  • W 68th Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue

Beginning at approximately noon the following streets in the vicinity ofMadison Square Gardenwill have intermittent closures/managed access to vehicular traffic:

  • 31stStreet from 6thAvenue to 7thAvenue – managed access
  • 32ndStreet from 6thAvenue to 7thAvenue – managed access
  • 33rdStreet from 6thAvenue to 7thAvenue- managed access
  • 7thAvenue from 30thStreet to 34thStreet – two western lanes closed
  • 8thAvenue from 31stStreet to 33rdStreet – one lane only/intermittent closures

Please note: Starting at approximately noon trucks and other large vehicles will not be able to access:

  • 7thAvenue from 30thStreet to 34thStreet
  • 8thAvenue from 30thStreet to 34thStreet

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26th, 2015

The FDR Drive will be subject to intermittent closures:

  • Southbound at 63rd Street
  • Northbound at South Ferry

According to the New York Police Department, there may be additional clousures.
