It may not be too long before New York City straphangers can stay connected even while sitting underground in a subway car.

Since last week, the MTA has been testing Wi-Fi connection on four cars along the E subway line, NY1 reported.

MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz confirmed the testing would be taking place until June 7 and said the E line was selected randomly.

He added that the move to bring Wi-Fi onto the subway cars is part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s directive to accelerate New Yorkers’ connectivity while commuting on the transportation system.

On May 17, Cuomo announced that the MTA started rolling out the first of 75 new buses equipped with Wi-Fi and USB charging ports throughout neighborhoods in Queens. Earlier this year the governor revealed that a total of 2,042 buses would be hitting the city’s streets over the next five years, replacing 40 percent of the current fleet of vehicles.

Ortiz said it is too early to determine if the agency will expand Wi-Fi testing to other lines because the initiative is currently in the early stages.

All underground subway stations are expected to be wired with Wi-Fi by the end of this year, Ortiz said, and they will all also include cellphone connectivity by 2017.
