After ballots were tabulated from 128,000 Conde Nast readers for the 28th annual Readers’ Choice Awards, the results were announced Tuesday morning regarding the world’s best cities, resorts, airports and other vacation categories, and the results put New York City as the best large U.S. city for the first time.

Other destinations that finished first in the category included Charleston, South Carolina as the best small U.S. city and Maui as the best U.S. island. Chicago’s Waldorf Astoria was named the best hotel in the U.S.

Some travel trends were indicated in this year’s list. Italy is a prime destination for returning travelers as its cities scored high in return-ability, and Northern Ireland’s economy has been boosted by HBO’s “Game of Thrones” with an additional $170 million in tourism revenue. Forty-five million travelers picked destinations that had served as locations for their favorite TV shows, the list revealed.

The full list will be published in the November issue of Conde Nast Traveler, on newsstands nationwide on October 28, 2015.
