Prepare to spend happy brunches at High Street on Hudson

High Street on Hudson is that rare breakfast spot where your first priority isn’t whether the mimosasare bottomless. The Philadelphia breakfast staple is now open in NYC with a serious focus on fresh breads and pastries, while the Union Square Greenmarket has been driving the menu.

While the greatest breakfast hits have made the trek — notably theRed Eye Danishand Hickory Town — newcomer The Bodega definitely makes a strong case for displacing your regular on-the-go nosh. Co-owner and chefEli Kulp, who was paralyzed in theAmtrak derailment back in May, is actually a New Yorker, so High Street on Hudson feels more like a homecoming than a newcomer.

Lunch is a vegetable-forward selection of hearty salads and sandwiches, though it does throw down the gauntlet with a “Best Grilled Cheese Ever” sandwich (cheddar, cultured butter, roasted potato bread).

Behind the scenes, the restaurant brought over some of its most notable talent from Philly and recruited the rest from the food world’s honor rolls: Manning the ovens is Alex Bois, whose breads helped bake High Street on Market second on Bon Appetit’sBest New Restaurants list in 2014, and Jon Nodler of another Kulp hit, a.kitchen.Desserts are in the hands of Food & Wine’s Best New Pastry Chef SamKincaid, and former Craft NYC chef de cuisine Taylor Naples is doing the heavy lifting in the kitchen.

When dinner arrives in the new year, expect family-style dishes, domestic natural wines and more NYC-inspired dishes.
