Running back Shane Vereen, a classic pass-catching back, is expected to sign with the New York Giants, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, though Yahoo!'s Rand Getlin reportedly later in the afternoon that the Patriots would have an opportunity to match New York's offer.

Vereen carried the ball 96 times for 391 yards and two touchdowns for the Patriots in 2014 but he did legit damage in the passing game, catching 52 balls from Tom Brady for 447 yards and three touchdowns.

Vereen has never been a featured back in the NFL, as he often split time with Stevan Ridley and LeGarrette Blount in New England.

Vereen was tremendous in the postseason for the Patriots, particularly in last month's Super Bowl win over Seattle as he caught 11 balls for 64 yards and gained 13 yards on the ground.
