NYC's food scene is at least half the hype of experiencing something before anyone else can. Today, that's Oreo's newest flavor, Filled Cupcake, which you can try a week before it's on shelves.

The cookies are behind an Oreo-shaped vault door at 245 W. 18th St. in Chelsea. Swing it open and pull a red lever, then watch as a snack-size pack of the new cookies slides down to you Willy Wonka-style.

The cookies accomplish what they say on the box. A Hostess cupcake has been reinterpreted into chocolate frosting and vanilla cream, then squashed between two original flavor Oreos. New Yorkers can try them at the vault until 6:30 p.m. today; everyone else will have to wait until Feb. 8, when they hit shelves for $4.49.

Nabisco, which makes Oreos, just released another new flavor, Cinnamon Bun, late last month. Expect more limited edition flavors — the company says it has another 50 or so at the prototype stage, with more ideas being developed constantly. Most flavors take between a year and 18 months to create, with monthly taste tests, though development can also take much longer.
