Transgender NYers to get insurance protection

Health insurance providers in New York State will be required to offer medically necessary treatment for patients suffering from gender dysphoria, under the terms of a letter sent by the state’s Department of Financial Services.

While claims for gender dysphoria treatment can still be subject to review — just like any other health claim, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said treatment for transgender New Yorkers should be as accessible as any other procedure.

“Respecting the rights and dignity of all New Yorkers is paramount,” Cuomo wrote in a statement.

Today’s announcement is the latest effort by the Cuomo administration to demonstrate interest in LGBT issues, having helped shepherd same-sex marriage through the state Legislature in 2011.
