The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) more or less fired basketball referee Karl Hess Friday, five days after he directed a racially insensitive comment toward a deep-pocketed fan.

During the Wake Forest – Louisville college basketball game last Sunday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Hess reportedly said to fan Mit Shah, “When I’m older, I want to sit in your seat and watch your Egyptian ass ref a game.”

Shah is the CEO of an Atlanta-based hotel management company and is of Indian descent. Shah tweeted out what Hess allegedly said to him during the game and pressure was put on the ACC to at least suspend Hess.

“It’s a sad day and is devastating,” Hess told ESPN on. “But I’m responsible. I wasn’t trying to deliberately hurt anyone. That’s not my character. I goof around a lot, and there was no intent to hurt anyone.”
