That cute hipster on the L with the Herschel backpack and vintage jacket? Yeah, chances are, he or she is streaming Justin Bieber. And that model walking through Soho wearing the latest designer duds? Stevie Wonder is most likely the most listened to artist on his or her phone. These aren’t the only surprising discoveries Spotify made while digging up data to see what New Yorkers were listening to.

The new data is going to be featured on billboards all over the city as part of Spotify’s Year in Music campaign, which basically serves as a barometer of who the most popular artists are in various cities and countries all over the world.

What people are listening to on Spotify varies greatly just here in New York City. East Villagers listen to The Weeknd more than any other artist while Soho residents prefer throwbacks like Stevie Wonder and Janet Jackson. In Williamsburg, Justin Bieber and Fetty Wap are crazy popular while over in Bushwick, Future is streamed the most. People in Hudson Yards are really into Beach House. And in Gowanus, listeners just want something that will put them to sleep; the number one playlist in that ‘hood is Deep Sleep.
