A job interview on steroids

An instructor at NAIT has made a fresh new spin on job recruiting Thursday by taking a page from Rabbi Yaacov Deyo, the creator of speed dating.

NAIT hosted a speed recruitment session for dozens employers and business students as part of a career building experiment.

Dozens of students were seen lining up outside a conference room where employers would meet with prospects in quick, five-minute interviews. As soon as a bell rang, students would alternate to the next potential employer.

“We keep on hearing about the job market right now and how difficult it is, and one of our jobs as educators in the college is to get our students jobs,” said Brian Wrightson, an instructor at NAIT’s JR Shaw School of Business.

“I seen something going on about speed dating and I thought why not? This is an experiment.

“Anything that we can do to help students get their foot in the door, that’s what we are here to do.”

Dean Seeger, a CEO with Sunfresh Farms Inc., says speed recruiting is a great idea because it gives an employer the chance to get a lot of information across to a prospective student.

“A lot of your decisions are based on gut anyways, so this is a good opportunity,” said Seeger.
