While most thoughts will turn to hearts, flowers and chocolates on the weekend before Valentine’s Day, my mind is on a ménage à trios. Now before you start emailing I mean the wine, not the other thing.


Made in California by the Folie à Deux Winery, the idea behind the cheeky name is that each of the Ménage à Trios wines is created from a trio of grape varieties or, in the case of the chardonnay, the same grape from three different regions in The Golden State.


The 2009 Ménage à Trois Red ($17.95 - $19.99) is made with a triple blend of zinfandel, merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Rich and ripe with just a kiss of residual sugar; it makes for a great all-purpose dinner wine as well as a mouth-filling on-its-own sipper perfect for a candle lit tête à tête.


Planning on surprising your Valentine with breakfast in bed this Sunday? Enhance the romance with a bottle of sparkling wine. Freixenet's Cordon Rosado Brut ($12.95 - $16.50) from Spain is a sexy, non-vintage bubbly rosé made in the traditional method. Serving-up a bright mix of dry red berries massaged by crisp acidity it's an ideal match for fresh fruit, lighter cheeses and, well, you know.
