A wake-up call on climate

Dozens of cellphone alarms went off simultaneously at the University of Alberta yesterday as a “wake-up call” for action on climate change.

Greenpeace on Campus organized a flash mob as one of 2,300 events that took place worldwide.

Students held their ringing phones in the air before calling government leaders to push them to keep climate change on the agenda before the 2009 UN climate change conference in Copenhagen.

MP Linda Duncan said the flash mob was a good way to ensure that young people called government representatives to press the issue of climate change.

“Copenhagen is too late; we need our government to act right now,” said Duncan.

World leaders are expected to meet in New York today to revive climate change negotiations.
