The three people accused of killing Dillon Blair Jewett will ask for bail next month.
Amanda Allison Greene, 18, and brothers Kyle Brian Gowen, 22, and Steven Shaun Gowen, 21, are charged with first-degree murder.
Jewett, 18, was found shot to death on an ATV path near an East Uniacke quarry on Oct. 3.
The trio appeared in a Shubenacadie courtroom yesterday. They were brought in separately and were told from now on they will face court proceedings together. They will be back in court Jan. 13 for a plea and to possibly set a date for the preliminary hearing.
Outside the courtroom defence lawyers told reporters about their intent to seek bail for their clients. Brian Bailey, defence lawyer for the brothers, said he has a bail hearing booked for Dec. 8 in Windsor. Brian Smith, Greene’s lawyer, said he will be seeking bail for his client but hasn’t set a hearing date yet.
“Because everyone is presumed innocent until they’re proven guilty in this country,” Smith said, “bail ought not to be seen as a measure of punishment.”
Bailey said he noticed there were some items missing from the disclosure — such as text messages — from the Crown. On Tuesday a box full of materials arrived at his office.
“There is some information in there the police claim has some relevance.”
Family, friends on both sides of case pack court
Family and friends — of the victim and the accused — streamed through the metal detector at Shubenacadie provincial court yesterday.
They packed the courtroom as they waited for Amanda Greene, and brothers Kyle and Steven Gowen to appear.
The accused were brought in separately and sat in a bench perpendicular to the onlookers. They were surrounded by about six security personnel.
Dillon Jewett’s family held on to each other, white-knuckled, during the quick court proceedings yesterday. Jewett’s mother declined to speak with reporters afterward.
