Afternoon tech roundup: iPads, AOL and LinkedIn

Tech news! It’s always happening, even at the most inconvenient times! A roundup of today’s top tech-industry goings-on:

›› You can buy an iPad 2 tomorrow! What do you need to know? How about all this: You can buy one at an Apple store (duh) or if you live in the suburbs, at your local Best Buy, Target or Wall-Mart. If for some reason you like to hang out in phone stores, you can also get one at an AT&T or Verizon store. But don’t expect to pop in and get an iPad 2 on your lunch hour: For some reason, you can only buy one after 5 p.m.

If you want to order one online, though, you can do that after 1 a.m. PST (4 a.m. EST). That’s a whole 13 hours earlier —take that, people who go outside!

›› If you work at AOL, though, you may want to save your $500. The company just announced that it will cut 900 jobs — 20% of its work force — from its content and technology divisions in order to “eliminate overlap that stems from its recent purchase of The Huffington Post.” Arianna Huffington, we’re sure, is laughing maniacally into her special champagne made from the fermented tears of professional journalists. (Full disclosure: This author once drew an hourly paycheck from the Huffington Post.)

››Luckily, maybe some of those laid-off AOL employees can get a job with LinkedIn, which is planning to get into the aggregation business. Over at TechCrunch, former LinkedIn employee Mrinal Desai brainstorms ways the little-used ‘Facebook of business’ could turn itself into a social-news powerhouse. Business Insider is skeptical, though: Doesn’t Twitter already do that?
