All I want for Christmas are some new Christmas songs

Tired of Burl Ives’ Holly Jolly Christmas? Find yourself screaming whenever you hear Feliz Navidad by Jose Felicano? Then maybe you need to adopt an entirely new Christmas playlist. Here’s what’s new for 2010.

Christmas is Here
Buckcherry
Bluesy mid-tempo rocker that’s surprisingly festive from Buckcherry. The result of a bluesy jam designed to come up with a Christmas song. (Available now on iTunes).

Christmas Lights
Coldplay
The last seasonal song from Coldplay was their version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas on a tough-to-find 2002 compilation. This new original song sets things up for two U.K. gigs in aid of a British homeless charity called Crisis this Sunday and Monday (iTunes)

Santa Stole My Lady
Fitz and the Tantrums
There’s lots of buzz around this indie band with the huge soul influence. This track sounds like it could have been recorded at Berry Gordy’s Detroit studio in 1968. (iTunes)

Boots
The Killers
The band still might be on a break as singer Brandon Flowers works his solo record, but everyone came back together for the fifth annual recording of a Killers Christmas single. Proceeds from this year’s track will go toward the Product Red campaign, which raises awareness about the scourge of AIDS in Africa.

Peppermint Winter
Owl City
Adam “Owl City” Young has had an eventful couple of years thanks to his Ocean Eyes album. He’s decided to cap 2010 with a paean to his idealized winter wonderland. (iTunes)

Night Castle
Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Who knew that a mix of power metal, rock opera and classical music would work so well? They’ve sold more than seven million concert tickets and are the second-biggest catalogue artist for Atlantic Records. Only Led Zeppelin has sold more. Really. Try Nutrocker, a re-imagining of “The Nutcracker.” (In stores and online)

A 604 Records Christmas
Various Artists
The label founded by Chad Kroeger has a ten-track CD featuring roster artists like Daniel Wesley, Suzie McNeil and Jakalope. No Nickeback or Theory of a Deadman, though. (In stores and online)

Our First Christmas
Light Organ Records
In an interesting marketing movie, the first release from a new alt-indie label from Vancouver (founded by a partner in 604 Records) features nothing by artists on their roster performing Christmas songs. I like Snow by the Zolas: “The mercury is cold and grey/The colour of your mother’s veins.” (In stores and online.)
