All I want for Christmas is my flight to London

Christmas travellers might want to ask Santa for a break in the weather.

Winter weather is causing travel headaches especially for those travelling to snowy London or over the choppy seas to Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Saturday London flight to and from Halifax was cancelled and yesterday’s flight was significantly delayed.

“And we saw some delays here from the snow we had on Friday,” said airport spokeswoman Ashley Barnes.

“Whether people are travelling to Europe or not, people should always be checking before they head out to the airport.”

Marine Atlantic says its ferries could be out of service for several days to avoid the latest storm system moving into the region.

The ferry operator said its vessels were tied up yesterday for an estimated 72 hours due to a marine forecast calling for winds over 100 km/h and seas of seven to nine metres.

Spokeswoman Tara Laing said if the weather plays out as expected, Marine Atlantic may not be able to move all of its customers with reservations prior to Christmas Day.

“Given the proximity to Christmas, this is a difficult time of the year for delays but our first priority is the safety of our customers and crew,” Laing said in a statement.

“The forecasted weather conditions will exceed safe operating parameters for an extended period of time.”

Marine Atlantic said it expects that terminal waiting areas will quickly fill up and terminals will close to new traffic once they have reached capacity.
