Apple unveils new iPhone models, prices and release dates during keynote event

iPhone X

On Tuesday Apple unveiled the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, the iPhone 8 along with other products during a special event held inside the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple’s new headquarters in Cuperino, California.

The event started with Tim Cook reflecting on the impact Steve Jobs had on the company and the world to pay tribute Steve and inspire the next generation. Cook talked about the new Apple Theater and briefly mentioned it’s new state-of –the art features.  

Here are the new products unveiled at the Apple event on Tuesday 

iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus

The iPhone has always been the most highly anticipated device during Apple events and on Tuesday Apple unveiled the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8Plus. Both phones feature a new design made with glass on both sides. Apple claims it is the most durable glass ever used in a smartphone. 

Both models have new speakers and are 25% louder than the iPhone 7 speakers.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus will feature the new A11 Bionic chip with 3 gigs of RAM. Both phones will have wireless charging. This means you can set your phone down on a charging mat and charge your phone without plugging it in. It will also free up your Lightening port and give you the ability to charge your phone and use your headphones at the same time. 

The 8 Plus model will use facial detection technology in its camera to allow users to take advantage of advanced light effects when using the camera in Portrait Mode. According to Apple, the 12-megapixel camera on both models have been improved and you’ll be able to get sharper detail in photos and better results in low light.

The iPhone 8 has a 4.7-inch display and there’s a 5.5-inch display in the 8 Plus and will be available in 64GB or 256GB. As for colors, the new iPhones will be available in Silver, Space Gray and a new pinkish gold finish. 

Availability:  Orders begin September 15; shipments begin September 22.

Price: The iPhone 8 and the 8 plus will start at $699 and $799 for the 64GB version. Expect to pay $849 and $949 for the 256GB.

iPhone X 

To mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, Apple unveiled the iPhone X. Apple claims the iPhone X is the “biggest leap forward” when it comes to advancing smartphone technology.

The phone will feature an edge-to-edge display and will not have a conventional home button that we’ve become accustomed to in previous models.

One of the biggest features the iPhone X has is a new feature Apple is calling Face ID Face ID uses facial recognition technology to unlock the phone. So instead of the phone reading your thumbprint, you now stare at your device, and then swipe up to unlock it.  Special sensors are used near the front facing camera that will analyze and detect your face to grant you access. It will be interesting to see how this works in the dark or in the winter when you’re face is completely covered.

As for security, Apple claims that facial recognition is more accurate than Touch ID. They said there’s a one-in-a-1,000,000 chance of someone gaining access to your phone compared to a one-in-50,000 chance using the Touch ID.

Apple has introduced a Super Retina Display that will be featured in the iPhone X, so expect to see sharper detail when looking at content on your phone. The X features a 1125 x 2436 OLED display and it is the first time Apple is using OLED technology in their phones.

The iPhone X will come in Space Gray and Silver.

According to Apple, the iPhone X will give you two more hours of battery life than the iPhone 7.

Like the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, the iPhone X will come in 64GB and 256GB sizes.

Availability:  Orders for the iPhone X will begin October 27. The phone will not begin shipping on November 3.

Price:  Expect to pay $999 for the 64 GB version and $1,149 for the 256 GB.  

Apple TV 4K

The Apple TV has been upgraded with 4K technology and HDR to accommodate high-quality video content already available on streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon.

The Apple TV is powered by the new A10x Fusion processor and will have four times better graphics capabilities than the previous Apple TV.

Since Apple has stepped into the 4K arena, they want to assure you that your older HD content doesn’t go to waste. If you purchased HD movies from iTunes, they will give you a free upgrade to the 4K version of the movie if it’s available.

On the Apple TV, you’ll be able to watch live sports and live news and receive notifications when shows are about to start.

Apple Watch Series 3

On Tuesday, Apple unveiled the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X/ The first Apple product unveiled by Apple during the September 2017 event was the Apple Watch Series 3. According to Apple, the Apple Watch surpasses the Rolex and has become the most popular watch in the world. The presentation began with Apple Watch customers reading stories about their watches and how the watch has impacted their lives.

Below are the confirmed features of the Apple Watch Series 3 

OS 4. The Apple Watch Series 3 will be equipped with Apple’s latest OS.

Improved fitness tools.  According to Apple, there are several new apps and new tools for swimmers and fitness enthusiasts. 

Improved heart monitoring. There were several enhancements made to the heart rate app and there will be new ways to gather heart information including resting heart rate, recovery heart rates and charts and graphs to help track your heart activity. You can set up your watch to send you notifications when the watch recognizes irregular hear when you’re not active.

Cellular Service.  New to the Apple Watch Series 3 is cellular service. The face of the watch doubles as a cellular antenna and you’ll be able to sign up with service providers to get cellular service for your Apple Watch. You no longer need your iPhone nearby to take full advantage of wireless capabilities.

Music streaming. Aside from the new heart monitoring features and the cellular service option, the Apple Watch Series 3 will allow you to stream music from the device.
