Attack ‘not a hate crime’

An early-morning attack on a gay man on Davie Street doesn’t appear to have been a hate crime as investigators initially speculated, police said.

The assault happened just after 1 a.m. on May 2, when a man walking down Davie Street was pelted with eggs and had a beer bottle thrown at him by three men. The beer bottle missed.

The suspects turned themselves in to police on Friday following the release of surveillance camera images showing the men buying eggs from a Mac’s convenience store.

“The investigation is ongoing, but early indications are that the assault appears to have been random and not a hate crime,” Vancouver police said in a release.
