Bartering for beer at Montana winter carnival

WHITEFISH, Mont. – The Great Northern Brewing Co. is posing a question to beer lovers: What would you do — or trade — for a year’s supply of lager?

In the second annual Black Star Barter, contestants are invited to present “any beer-worthy object or talent” in front of an audience at the Whitefish Winter Carnival. The winner receives 52 cases of the brewery’s Black Star beer.

Judges look for “creativity, awesomeness, thoughtfulness and enthusiasm,” say organizers. Last year’s submissions included singing dogs, whitewater rafting trips and “personal aerial drops of beer to your doorstep.”

The Feb. 4 event is one of the offbeat happenings in the thoroughly offbeat festival, now in its 53rd year.

Also on tap is the World Skijoring Championships (Jan. 27-29), an extreme sport in which galloping horses pull skiers by rope as they careen over jumps.

The carnival even comes with a concocted legend that includes a god named Ullr and a fierce band of yeti snowmen that try to steal his queen.

Whitefish is a one-hour drive from the border community of Roosville, B.C.
