A base jumper was rescued from the Chief in Squamish yesterday afternoon after he crashed halfway down the imposing granite cliff.
Rescue crews rappelled down Stawamus Chief Mountain, a prominent and well-known landmark, to reach the man.
“He’s OK,” said Suzanne Kelly, a member of the Squamish Emergency Program, a search-and-rescue group based in the Howe Sound community.
Kelly was not among those who rescued the man, as her group was also searching for two groups of hikers who were lost near Squamish.
The base jumper crashed about half of the way down the 417-metre granite dome. He made it to a ledge and waited for help.
Squamish RCMP were informed about the incident at 9 a.m. and used a helicopter to make contact with the man and confirm that he was safe and uninjured.
The rescue is the second in just over two weeks. On July 14, a base jumper crashed into the Chief and also was assisted down by search-and-rescue volunteers.
