Beaton moves on to Screaming Eagles

Lower Sackville’s Alex Beaton was dealt to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in the lone deal yesterday as a quiet QMJHL trade period continued.

Lower Sackville’s Alex Beaton was dealt to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in the lone deal yesterday as a quiet QMJHL trade period continued.

Beaton, a 20-year-old who has 199 games of QMJHL experience, was moved from the Gatineau Olympiques for a package that included 18-year-old forward Felix Bergeron.

The move leaves the Screaming Eagles with four over-agers, with Beaton currently playing for the junior A Woodstock (N.B.) Slammers. He is third in Maritime Junior Hockey League scoring with 60 points in 33 games.

Beaton posted 47 points in his best QMJHL season in 2008-09 with the Lewiston Maineiacs.

Beaton is an insurance policy if Screaming Eagles GM Mario Durocher trades one of his current three over-agers: Defenceman Spencer Metcalfe, forward Taylor MacDougall and goalie Andrew Hayes.

“If we don’t (get) the price we want, we’re going to keep them because they bring a lot of leadership to our dressing room with our young guys,” Durocher said of his current over-agers.
