Bike lanes for Jarvis?

City council has approved a plan to remove the “reversible” centre commuter traffic lane from Jarvis Street and improve the road including new bike lanes.

The $6.3 million plan was approved 28-16 after a daylong debate, pitting councillors who are enthusiastic cyclists against councillors worried about traffic congestion.

The Jarvis plan, which also calls for widening the east sidewalk, planting more trees and adding heritage plaques, is part of an environmental assessment report that now goes to the province for approval.

Coun. Kyle Rae, who pushed for the changes, said the road should be shared among drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Councillors who fought the removal of the centre lane warned yesterday’s vote would become a ballot-box issue.
