The assets of wealthy Canadians will reach $6.77 trillion by 2020, a new study predicts, adding there will be a lot more millionaires over the coming decade.

The study by the Deloitte Center for Financial Services says the number of millionaires in Canada will surge to more than 2.4 million, up by more than 32 per cent from the current 1.7 million. The rise is partly due to the strong economy, particularly in the resource sector.

Globally, wealth among millionaire households could more than double over the next decade in 25 major economies, growing to $202 trillion from $92 trillion this year.

Developed nations are expected to remain the centres of global wealth, with 43 per cent held in the U.S.
