Calgary mom’s beef lands her Dr. Phil gig

Putting in her two cents has bought a Calgary “writing mother” her 15 minutes of fame after she caught the eye of the Dr. Phil show.

Heather Cook, a.k.a. The Writing Mother, commented on a blog about a Washington Post article where she noted 74-year-old University of Maryland sociologist John Robinson stating that mothers have 30 hours of leisure time every week.

“I don’t know where he thinks the leisure time is, if it’s reading a work book while bathing, or studying work notes while watching my son’s karate but I was upset he was trying to redefine my leisure time,” Cook told Metro.

Cook barely has time for sleep while she cares for a husband, an eight-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter, and works full-time, but she has even found time to write two books last year, she says.

“I’m a very busy mother, and I definitely don’t have 30 hours of free time. I’m definitely not complaining because I choose it that way, but his comments were a shock.”

While Cook’s comments on Undomestic Diva’s blog were among hundreds of other angry mothers, hers caught the eye of producers on the Dr. Phil show who asked her to produce a video for the show.

“I was surprised they contacted me over everyone else but I think this is a lot of fun. I just wanted to express my opinion that I’m a very busy mother, and I definitely don’t have 30 hours of free time.”

Cook had to tape her Dr. Phil piece — safely — while driving, but the video is set to air on Feb. 22, according to Dr. Phil officials.
