Calgary Zoo welcomes three newborn foals from endangered species

Three new additions are being welcomed at the Calgary Zoo.

The zoo announced Thursday that three Asian Wild Horses – or Przewalski’s horses – were born at the Calgary Zoo’s endangered species breeding facility – the Devonian Wildlife Conservation Centre (DWCC).

Calgarians’ help will be sought to name the two fillies and one colt, who, with their arrival, expanded the zoo’s herd from eight to 11.

It’s the first time since 1994 Asian Wild Horse foals have been born at the Calgary Zoo.
“It is great to once again be participating in the breeding program for this endangered species,” said Bob Peel, curator for the DWCC.

“While these foals will not likely be re-introduced to the wild, they represent the next generation for an aging captive population.”

Details on a naming contest will be released in the future.
