In a special world where cats can fly, there’s only one who cannot — Caramba. A shy, quiet tomcat, Caramba wishes he could take flight with the others, but hasn’t been able to master this gift.

When his fear of being different pushes him to secretly practice on his own, Caramba makes an amazing discovery, learning just how special being different can be.

This year, more than 500,000 Grade One students will receive copies of the heartwarming story of Caramba courtesy of the TD Grade One Book Giveaway, the largest free book distribution program to school-aged children in Canada.

Caramba author and illustrator Marie-Louise Gay has produced 40 picture books and has won nearly every major Canadian children’s literary prize — some of them even twice! The captivating story and beautiful illustrations in Caramba are just some of the reasons that The Canadian Children’s Book Centre (CCBC), in conjunction with TD Bank Financial Group, has chosen this special book for their annual TD Grade One Book Giveaway initiative.

“We’re excited that children across the country will get a chance to explore the special world of Caramba,” says Frank McKenna, TD's Deputy Chair and Literacy Champion. ”This story will hopefully teach children to recognize their own special talents, and encourage a love of reading.”
