Charla Nash: First transplant photos of chimp maul victim released

The Connecticut woman who was severely mauled by a chimpanzee in 2009 released a statement and photos today, less than a month after she received a face transplant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

The photos released today are the first post-surgery pictures of Charla Nash.

At Brigham and Women’s “I received a new face and two hands that will allow me to be independent once again and able to be part of society,” a statement from Nash said.

However, Nash’s transplanted hands were removed after her body did not accept them.

“I will now be able to do things I once took for granted,” her statement said.

More than 30 physicians, nurses and other medical professionals were involved in the transplant last month.

At the time the full face transplant was the third in three months at the hospital.
