A building that forms part of the University of Toronto has been evacuated because of a chemical spill in a laboratory.

The precautionary evacuation was ordered at the Banting and Best Medical Research building (on College Street near University Avenue.)

No word yet on the type of chemical involved and Toronto firefighters and a hazardous materials unit is on the scene.

CP24 reports the chemical is dry and could be in an unstable state.

The website for the department says the work there focuses on such fields as developmental biology, gene expression, genomics and muscle biology.
