‘Christmas in the summer’

Five weeks to go until Edmonton’s biggest summer celebration begins.

The countdown to Capital Ex started yesterday as Northlands launched plans for this year’s fair festivities.

“It’s like celebrating Christmas in the summer, that’s how excited I got as a kid coming out here,” said Capital Ex spokesperson Randy Kilburn.

“That’s how excited I got as a parent bringing my own kids out here, and that’s how excited I get as a grandparent bringing my grandkids. It still feels like I’m celebrating Christmas Day in July.”

Capital Ex is 10 days of midway barkers, music, and bags and bags of mini doughnuts.

It’s about great concerts and children’s entertainment on the Telus Stage, President’s Choice SuperDogs flying through the air next to FMX and BMX bike-riding pros, and relaxing with a glass of wine or beer at Sip! in Hall A or one of the three patios in the park.

Not to mention the nightly fireworks displays.

“To me, this is one of the most exciting times of the year and it does bring out the kid in me,” said Northlands president Ken Knowles.

“I am so excited about the presentation that we have for our fair-going public this year. We have a lot of new attractions, a lot of new entertainment and I think we have an absolutely great offering that will certainly appeal to the masses.”

The fun kicks off with the parade on July 22. Gates to the grounds open at noon on July 23 and the action doesn’t stop until the gates close on Aug. 1.
