Keith Crisco, the candidate running against former “American Idol” contestant Clay Aiken in the Democratic primary for a Congressional seat in North Carolina, has died. The race was so close that both candidates were still waiting on results, though the count on Monday showed Aiken leading by just a few hundred votes after the election last week.

Crisco’s death was confirmed by the company he co-founded, Asheboro Elastics Corporation. The Asheboro Courier Tribune reported that he died due to injuries sustained during a fall at home. He had previously served as secretary of the N.C. Department of Commerce.

The candidates were waiting to see whether they would face a full recount or a two-man runoff. Aiken announced in a statement that he would be suspending all campaign activities, saying that he was “stunned and deeply saddened.”
