Cold hurting cherry blossoms

The organizer of the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival is facing an awkward problem. Only one of the city’s 36,000 cherry trees is blooming

But Linda Poole said that while the recent cold weather spell has made the blossoms shy, the festival also includes dance performances, music, a tea ceremony and sake tasting, as well as a photography contest.

“Not only blossom lovers come to the festival,” Poole said. “We have local people who are fascinated with Japanese culture, and especially about our tea ceremony.”

About 1,500 people are expected to take part in the fourth annual festival this weekend.
