Tropical Storm Colin could be heading our way by early next week.
But Colin would most likely lose most of his thunder before reaching the East Coast of Canada, said Chris Fogarty, program supervisor for the Canadian Hurricane Centre in Dartmouth.
“If it does affect us, my estimate is around August 9 to 11,” he said, adding that’s only if the storm continues on its current track.
Fogarty said Colin, the area’s third tropical storm of the season, is weak right now and couldn’t say whether or not it would eventually reach hurricane status.
The system approaching the southeastern Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic had maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour yesterday as it was upgraded to a tropical storm from a tropical depression.
The storm was located about 945 miles east of the Lesser Antilles islands, with its current five-day track predicting a path towards the East Coast of the United States.
Last year’s two big storms for Nova Scotia — Bill and Danny — both hit the coast in August.
Back in May, the Canadian Hurricane Centre predicted between 14 and 23 named storms this season, eight to 14 of which will be hurricanes.
